Disney Pixar’s Coco | Film Review

Last month I went to see Disney Pixar’s Coco in cinema. I saw it opening weekend in the UK as it came out nearly two months later than it did in America. I still can’t believe that Disney thinks this is ok. It’s like they are punishing us as we don’t live in America, but anyway, that a debate for later. I knew after watching the film that I had to review it and tell you a little bit about it, because it is THAT good!

What’s Coco about?

Coco is based in Mexico and the story is based on the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. The story follows a young boy Miguel. Miguel’s family has banned music for generations, this causes some problems. Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Miguel is desperate to prove to his family that he has a talent. To do so, Miguel runs away from home to enter a music competition, to do so he needs to borrow the guitar of the dead Ernesto de la Cruz, he strums the guitar and some how ends up entering into the colourful Land of the Dead. Whilst in the Land of the Dead, he meets the trickster, Hector. The two friends embark on a journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family and to bring music back into the family.

My Thoughts…

I just want to mention quickly here how incredible the animation is. I mean, lets be real, every Pixar animation is awesome! But there was something about the skeletons in this film that had me in awe. They looked real, I mean, not that I really know what a moving living skeleton would look like (I haven’t quite followed in Miguel’s foot steps over to the Land of the Dead!).

I rarely cry at films, but I cried watching this one! The story is so moving. I don’t want to reveal the plot as it is so good and I think it is better if you see it yourself rather than read about it, but there is a plot twist that I was totally not expecting! That’s why I love Pixar films as they always seem to surprise me. Yes, sometimes the story is obvious, but other times its just so unexpected! Honestly, this story is so good!

This film is heavily based around music and the importance of it, therefore Disney had to throw in a few songs! My favourite is Remember Me, the lullaby version as I think this version has much more meaning than the other. This version is sung by a Father and daughter, as the Father is leaving to start his music career. This song was written by the father as a way for the daughter to remember him (one of the many bits that made me cry!). Another favourite of mine is Un Poco Loco, which translates to Kinda Crazy, this is sung by Miguel and Hector. It’s such a fun song that I was dancing in my seat (I got some weird looks from the people next to me!).

I 100% recommend that you go and see Coco. I know what some of you may be saying, ‘its a Disney film, its for kids’. My response to you is that Coco is not just for kids! When I went to see it, there were few children, it was mainly adults, and I went on a Saturday! I think that tells you that this film is 100% for everybody! So go and see it!
