How to: Smarties Piñata Cake

On the 30th March, my friend had her 18th birthday and I needed to get her a present, so I decided to make her a Smarties Piñata cake. Her favourite chocolate is smarties, so it made perfect sense! I was searching online for a Smarties cake that was perfect for Alice. However, they all were just not right, so I decided to come up with my own!

Ingredients for the Cake:

  • 8oz  butter
  • 8oz caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 6oz self-raising flour
  • 2oz coco powder

How to:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC
  2. Grease 3 circular cake tins. (I use the Wilton Cake Release for ease!)
  3. Cream the butter and the sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy
  4. Crack one egg and place it in the mixing bowl. Also place 1-2 tablespoons of flour. Mix until combined
  5. Keep adding eggs and flour until completely mixed in
  6. Separate the mixture, equally into the three tins.
  7. Put in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to regularly check the cake after 10 minutes
  8. Once finished leave the cakes to cool before decoration

For Decoration:

  • 1 tub of Betty Crocker’s chocolate icing (you could make your own, but I dislike doing it as I always get it wrong, and this stuff tastes amazing!)
  • 6 sharing packs of Smarties

How to:

  1. Separate the different colours in 4 of the 6 packets of Smarties
  2. Using one of the three cakes, cut a large hole in the centre. You need to leave about a 1-2 inch border for the cake to remain sturdy
  3. Cover the top of the bottom cake with the chocolate icing
  4. Carefully place the cake you cut a hole in on top of the covered icing cake
  5. Pour the Smarties from the remaining two bags into the cake
  6. Cover the rim of the cake with chocolate icing
  7. Place the final cake on top
  8. Cover the entire cake with chocolate icing
  9. With your sorted Smarties, decorate the top and sides of the cake. (I did stripes, but there are some really cool designs on Pinterest)

I had a lot of fun baking this cake and I used soon many Smarties for this cake, I am now sick of them! One day, I would love to try it with different things, such as sweets or other forms of chocolate. According to my friend Alice, the cake was delicious! (P.S. Happy Birthday Alice!)
